‘Live PD’ Is Most-Viewed Show Of 2018 On OTT, VOD And DVR

A&E’s Live PD is finishing 2018 as the most-viewed show of the year on OTT platforms as well as via VOD and DVR, according to a survey of smart-TV data by Inscape.

A subsidiary of smart-TV maker Vizio, Inscape surveys viewing across some nine million households, spanning all demographics and geographic areas. Compared with Nielsen and other firms, it is able to measure streaming and linear across a wider sample set that is gaining currency among ad buyers and networks.

The 2018 findings (see below) offer more evidence of the fragmenting state of TV, with the top 10 shows accounting for just 9.4% of total viewing.

NFL football topped the live-viewing chart, which was dominated by sports. TodayGood Morning America and Friends were the only non-sports programs in the live Top 10. ESPN’s SportsCenter was the No. 3 show.

Now in its third season, Live PD has become a mainstay for A&E, which recently upped its order to 150 more episodes. The show airs on Fridays and Saturdays at 9PM ET/PT and a half-hour syndicated version called Live PD: Police Patrol started in the fall.

Below the top spot occupied by Live PD, one notable change in 2018 compared with 2017 is the fading of The Walking Dead. The zombie series topped last year’s OTT and VOD rankings and was runner-up in the DVR standings. This year, the AMC franchise was No. 5 on OTT, No. 4 on DVR and No. 3 on VOD.

MTV’s Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, NBC’s This is Us and ABC’s Grey’s Anatomyall had strong showings. FX’s Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans MC was a notable freshman entry, finishing ninth on the OTT list.
